New York: July 25, 2016

On Friday, July 22, 2016, hate once again brought anguish and violence to yet another community when a man opened fire in a mall in Munich, Germany and then killed himself. David Ali Sonboly was 18 years old and born and raised in Munich. According to BBC News, Sonboly suffered from mental health problems, for which he sought treatment, and planned the attack for a year but did not target any of the three people known to have bullied him in school. He purchased an illegal glock to carry out his crimes and authorities believe that at least one other young man knew of the planned attack and did nothing to alert the authorities. (BBC News, Munich Shooting: David Sonoboly Planned Attack for Year, July 25, 2016). According to CNN, Munich police state that Sonboly’s parents were of Iranian descent and were too distraught to speak about the incident and articles on Why Students Kill and other rampage killings were found in the shooter’s home.

The senseless killing of innocent victims saddens us all. UNITED SIKHS staff offer prayers to the nine (9) victims and condolences to their families. We wish all those injured in the attack a full and quick recovery.
