UNITED SIKHS Expands Guru Nanak Food Bank and Relief to Serve the Needy
Our local team has begun the campaign and teams from other UNITED SIKHS chapters will be leaving for Kenya soon.
Nairobi, Kenya:  UNITED SIKHS has launched the “Feed The Hungry In Africa” campaign following the United Nations’ call for “massive” action to save millions of people in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa region. The call was made last week during an emergency meeting of U.N. aid agencies and charities at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome.
According to the chief of the United Nations’ Refugee Agency, Africa is experiencing the worst drought in 60 years leading to food shortage, malnutrition and deaths.  Tens of thousands of people have died in the past few months. The Sri Guru Nanak Food Bank in Kenya, a project of UNITED SIKHS, will lead this campaign working in conjunction with the Government Agencies and the United Nations.

During our Feed The Hungry in Africa campaign we will seek to provide Langgar (hot meals prepared by the community) to counter malnutrition and medical aid to reduce deaths. We need you to volunteer or donate so that the Langgar may start as soon as possible. Our local team has begun the campaign and teams from other UNITED SIKHS chapters will be leaving for Kenya soon.
Well before the present crisis, UNITED SIKHS’ proactive approach in Kenya for the last few years has been to provide basic amenities such as food, water, and education. Our team of Directors from USA was in Kenya this year in view of reports of impending drought conditions. The result was the launch of Sri Guru Nanak Food Bank on January 22, 2011. Please read the details here.
Additionally, our team is working on many other projects including providing bore wells for safe drinking water, establishing schools, providing medical aid. Please read more here. Jaswinder Kaur, UNITED SIKHS Director in Kenya spearheads these projects.
