UNITED SIKHS Presents

Indonesia board for natural disaster affairs honors United Sikhs

In the wake of recent high-magnitude earthquakes, a tsunami, and volcanic eruptions in Donggala, Indonesia, the region has been devastated, with over 2,105 lives lost, 4,612 injured, and significant public health concerns due to potential disease outbreaks from torrential rains. The disaster has displaced 222,986 individuals, damaged 68,451 homes, and severely impacted 45 healthcare facilities, with nine being critically damaged.

UNITED SIKHS launched the “Feed-a-Family” campaign to address the immediate needs of affected communities by providing emergency food and aid. The organization aimed to offer support through public kitchen services (langar) and additional relief efforts to help those impacted by the disaster.

UNITED SIKHS set up emergency public kitchens to serve langar meals twice a day, catering to the local community’s needs. The organization mobilized volunteers to provide aid packages and essential support in response to the disaster. Efforts were recognized by the National Board for Natural Disasters, which awarded UNITED SIKHS a certificate of appreciation for their service. UNITED SIKHS plans to expand their relief work by adopting three Indonesian villages—Tanjung Batu, Gunung Bale, and Kabonga Besar—and focusing on medical care and mental health counseling.

The recognition from the National Board for Natural Disasters underscores the impact of UNITED SIKHS’ emergency response. The relief efforts have provided critical support to displaced individuals, with ongoing efforts to address the public health crisis. The “Feed-a-Family” campaign successfully encourages donations, with $30 pledges supporting a family of four for one month, contributing to the long-term recovery and rebuilding of the affected villages.

The resilience of the local communities, combined with the continued support from UNITED SIKHS, highlighted the strength of humanitarian aid and the collective effort to overcome devastation.
