UNITED SIKHS Provide Humanitarian Aid in Chamrang Road Fire

On June 27, a devastating fire broke out in the Chamrang area of Sri Amritsar Sahib, destroying 80 makeshift shacks that housed about 300 people, primarily from Bihar. These individuals belonged to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) class, earning daily wages and storing their meager possessions in their temporary huts. The fire spread quickly, leaving the victims without shelter, utensils, clothes, or money. Many lacked basic identification, such as Aadhaar cards or bank accounts, compounding their vulnerability.

UNITED SIKHS needed to respond swiftly to provide immediate relief, including food, shelter, and essential supplies, to the displaced families. They had to assess the victims’ urgent needs and mobilize resources to offer effective support.

The UNITED SIKHS team arrived at the scene and provided immediate assistance by preparing and distributing Langar (hot meals) consisting of rice, dal, vegetables, and rotis to all 300 affected individuals. Recognizing the broader needs of the community, the volunteers also distributed earthen pots to store drinking water and provided bamboos and wooden planks for families to rebuild their makeshift shelters. In addition, they coordinated labor to help set up the temporary tents and kitchens.

Through the timely intervention of UNITED SIKHS, the fire victims received immediate sustenance and essential materials to rebuild their shelters in the aftermath of the disaster. The team continues to offer ongoing support, ensuring that the families are provided with the necessary resources to re-establish their lives amidst the challenging circumstances, including coping with the extreme heat of up to 48°C.
