UNITED SIKHS Presents

UNITED SIKHS Rebuild Haiti from Non-Stop Disaster

During the global pandemic in 2021, natural disasters were exacerbating the struggles of many underprivileged communities worldwide. In Haiti, a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck on August 14th, compounding the crisis for a nation still recovering from the 2010 earthquake.

UNITED SIKHS had a long-standing relationship with the people of Haiti, having previously provided humanitarian aid following the 2010 earthquake. When the 2021 disaster hit, their mission was to deliver immediate relief to displaced families and address the growing need for shelter and essential supplies in the face of worsening conditions.

UNITED SIKHS swiftly deployed rescue and reconnaissance teams on the ground. They distributed urgently needed food and medical supplies, recognizing the dire need for safe housing as thousands were left without shelter, exposed to tropical storms. The teams mobilized to construct basic, temporary shelters to protect families from the harsh weather. With tents and tarps providing only limited protection, UNITED SIKHS focused on building more durable structures, estimating the cost to shelter a family at $2000 and $500 for shared bathroom facilities.

UNITED SIKHS secured land to construct ten temporary homes, providing immediate relief and safety to several families. Their ongoing efforts, supported by community donations, allowed them to plan for further expansion to assist more displaced families, mitigating the impact of extreme weather on those most affected by the disaster.
